{"id":302,"date":"2022-10-21T18:03:26","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregrussell.scot\/?p=302"},"modified":"2022-10-21T18:08:17","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T18:08:17","slug":"westminster-circus-is-demolishing-whats-left-of-mps-reputations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregrussell.scot\/?p=302","title":{"rendered":"Westminster circus is demolishing what&#8217;s left of MPs&#8217; reputations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>IF my CV showed a job I\u2019d only been in for 44 days before being forced out, I\u2019d be ashamed to show it and I\u2019m fairly certain potential employers would have trashed it way before the interview stage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But what does Liz Truss get?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A yearly allowance of \u00a3115,000 for a job she couldn\u2019t manage for even a decent part of her probation period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And lo and behold Boris Johnson, the previous PM \u2013 the least trustworthy and most duplicitous and sleekit ever to have graced the corrupt \u2018corridors of power\u2019 is preparing a comeback to rival that of Lazarus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Behind the scenes though, sensible Tories, realising that Jane and Joe Public would never stand for it, have tried to avoid the need for a massive damage limitation exercise by setting the bar for anyone entering the new leadership contest at 100 votes, in the hope that the divisive former PM will not be able to garner enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, the House of Cards is beginning to collapse, but it has to fall completely and spectacularly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Why should the new PM be decided by 350-odd Tory MPs? The last incumbent was at least chosen by 172,000 people \u2013 granted they were members of the Conservative Party \u2013 but what of the wider population?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ask why the voting population of the UK should be denied a say and the \u2018experts\u2019 come back and say we live in a \u2018parliamentary democracy\u2019 \u2013 where representatives are elected to parliament to make the laws and decisions for the country \u2013 and that cannot be changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-235 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gregrussell.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/House-of-Cards.jpeg?resize=270%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gregrussell.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/House-of-Cards.jpeg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gregrussell.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/House-of-Cards.jpeg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gregrussell.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/House-of-Cards.jpeg?resize=206%2C116&amp;ssl=1 206w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gregrussell.scot\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/House-of-Cards.jpeg?w=1008&amp;ssl=1 1008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/>Why not, when the previous incumbent trashed the reputations of many politicians while he and his cabinet helped line their friends\u2019 pockets?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After all, they work for us, not the other way round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As Dr Andrew Corbett, from the Defence Studies Department at King\u2019s College, London, wrote: \u201cSince Prime Minister Boris Johnson was voted into power, his Government has threatened parliamentary sovereignty, the independence of the judiciary, the independence of the BBC, the individual right to trial by jury and has undermined public confidence in all institutions of governance to an extent never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You can\u2019t really argue with that can you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nobody in the Tory Party wants a general election, that is patently obvious given the slim chance of them being returned to government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But they should remember that the people are sovereign and that politicians are only in Westminster for as long as the people vote to keep them there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Quite simply the next PM (and governing party) should be decided in a general election \u2013 it\u2019s that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>simple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s enough for a Friday night \u2013 the No 10 picture was sent to me via LinkedIn by a colleague and it was too good not to use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pip pip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IF my CV showed a job I\u2019d only been in for 44 days before being forced out, I\u2019d be ashamed to show it and I\u2019m fairly certain potential employers would have trashed it way before the interview stage.
